» What are some common types of window coverings?
· Curtains are generally fabric panels that cover the entire window. They are suspended from a rod with simple tabs, rings, grommets, fabric ties or a pocket hem at the top. The fabric can be pulled back or gathered to the desired fullness, creating a smocked, or ruffled heading.
Curtains can be made from a variety of fabrics ranging very heavy to lightweight (also known as sheers). They can be dressed up with accents such as bows, brass rings, or silk tassel tie–backs.
· Drapes are heavyweight fabric
curtains. Draperiestend to bemore tailored, but like
curtains are hung from simple rod-pockets or metal drapery hooks which insert into pinch pleats. Drapes can be lined or unlined, and range from formal to informal depending on the type and weight of the fabric. Draw drapes are attached to traversing rods and are open and closed via a cord mechanism. Hand-drawn drapes can be pulled open or closed by hand or with a baton.
· Valances are simply shorter
curtains,
draperies, or soft shades, usually about a foot long that hang over the top edge of
curtains. Some variations include cloud, pouf, balloon, and tapered valences.
· Shades move up and down via a corded pulley system or spring loaded rollers. They are available in a various fabrics such as polyester, laminated cotton, or vinyl.
· Blinds come in a variety of styles, such as mini, wood, metal, or natural blinds. Typically they are made slats operated by a stick on a cord and pulley system, and can be synched up to fully expose the window.
· Swags are large pieces of fabric that are draped into soft, half circle shaped folds, either above or on top of the
curtains themselves. Most often they are draped over a wooden or decorative pole or pulled through a decorative sconce.
