Window treatment hardware consists of the ornamental and functional components that turn plain curtains and drapes into beautiful and decorative window coverings. Curtain rods and hardware are offered in a variety of styles that include wood, metal, iron, ceramic, and even glass. Here are some questions to consider in choosing window-covering hardware:

· Do you want the window hardware to stand out or be “invisible?”

· Will the curtains or drapery open and close or remain stationary?

· Are you layering window coverings (such as drapes over sheers) in a way that requires two or more rods?

· Does the hardware enhance or detract from your décor and window treatment?

There are several types of curtain rods, including:

· Tension or pressure rods – used inside of window frame and held in place by the pressure of a spring inside the rod. This rod does not use mounting brackets and screws, and therefore does not damage the woodwork.

· Cafe rods – used for hand-drawn window treatments, usually with rings or tie-tab curtains.

· Sash rods - use shallow mounting brackets so window

treatments hang close to the glass.

Other types of window hardware include:

· Finials – decorative hardware that embellish the ends of drapery rods.

· Brackets – support rods at each end, and also in the center of extra long rods.

· Drapery rings – rings that are hooked or sewn onto the top of the curtain and then strung on the rod to allow the fabric panels to open and close freely.

· Tiebacks – decorative anchors fixed to the wall that hold back the fabric panels from the door or window.

When deciding between purchasing ready-made curtains or making custom curtains, it is important to consider cost, commitment, and care. There are many ready-made curtains and drapes on the market that can cost as little as $10 per panel, up to hundreds of dollars per panel. Availability, ease of assembly, and specific cleaning instructions are one benefit of ready made curtains.

Making your own custom curtains allows you much more freedom when it comes to patterns and styles. You can find pattern books and templates at your local craft or fabric store, and even online. Wholesale fabrics can be found for $5-$50 per yard or more. Proper measurement and estimating is critical when purchasing fabric, and some more ornate draperies and swags can take many yards of both the decorate fabric and lining fabric. Also consider the amount of time it will take to construct your curtains. If you are contracting someone to construct your curtains for you, you will have to factor in labor costs.

Curtains should be cleaned often, as they tend to accumulate a great deal of dust and dirt. While there are some risks involved in cleaning—like potential distortion, or discoloration—there is no excuse for neglecting your curtains or draperies. Improper care can lead to deterioration of the fabric itself. Here are some tips for curtain care and cleaning:

· Take down your curtains and inspect the backside of the fabric. If the curtains are sun-rotted, it is better to shop for new curtains than try to clean them.

· Simple, unlined, ready-made curtains should be washed or dry-cleaned following the manufacturer's instructions.

· Custom-made curtains that have several layers of fabric and decorate trim should be thoroughly vacuumed at least once or twice a month. Carefully vacuum both the outside and the inside using a brush attachment, working from the top down.

· Avoid dry cleaning curtains with many layers, because you cannot predict how each layer will react to the dry cleaning.

· Dust falls right off shiny fabrics like silk or polished cotton with a simple shake.

· Boil rusty curtain rings in vinegar to recover their shine.

It doesn’t matter what window cleaner you purchase on the market, if you don’t know the proper way to clean a window you won’t get the correct results. Here are some basic techniques that will work for you if you apply them:

· Don’t forget to wash the windowsills and frames. Cleaning just the window will not suffice. If you really want that window to look clean and presentable, you need to clean around it as well. Remember that windows are not the only surfaces that get dirty. Windowsills and frames get dirty to.

· When cleaning the window, wash it: Some people get the idea that you just spray on a cleaner and wipe it down. Not necessarily. Sometimes the dirt and grime accumulates. It may be possible to use a sponge instead of a paper towel.

· When drying do it right: Instead of just spraying on the foam and wiping it off randomly across the window, always start at the top of the window and work your way down till you get to the bottom. This way you cover the whole window. This prevents streaks.

· Polish your windows: You may not believe this, but old newspapers make great window polishers. Just crumple a page or two and briskly buff the window from one side to the other. This will leave a shiny, streak-free surface.

· Use a portable vacuum cleaner: When you clean your windows, make sure to attack the panes and windowsills. It would be best to use a small paint brush and hand held vacuum cleaner to remove all loose debris that gets on the windowsill. After you do this take a wet rag, soaked with a window cleaner and wipe down the frame good. If you find the window locks don’t work right, by getting sticky, take a can of lubricant to it.

Before, during, and after cleaning a window, there are many safety precautions you need to take. If you don’t follow these tips you could injure yourself or others. Don’t be a know-it-all. Read the safety instructions that came with your window cleaning solution. Also follow these tips as well:

· Caution: Never mix bleach and ammonia together if you don’t want to suffocate to death. A toxic gas is produced that could kill you if you are prolonged to it long enough. You may not know this, but chlorine has been around since the sixteenth century. And as you know, being you have a pool, it is the most widely used pool chemical on the market. Chlorine works by combining with water to produce hypochlorous acid and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals work together to kill microorganisms.

· Portable Ladders: Depending on the home and how thorough you are at cleaning the windows, you may use a portable ladder. Many people have been reported killed or serious injured by falling off a ladder when cleaning a window. Do not over-reach. Instead climb an additional ladder step to reach the spot you are trying to clean. Also, do not step onto a windowsill to clean the window. Many windowsills are narrow. They are not made for stepping onto. So be careful.

· Using Proper Equipment: If you are planning on cleaning your windows from the outside, and you don’t have a ladder, it would be best to invest in a waterfed pole. These poles act like sponges and squeegees in that you can put water on them to clean the high-to-reach places. If you do use one of these devices, make sure no one is around you so they won’t get poked as you bring the long handle down to and behind you.

· Use a Squeegee: When you clean your window and are ready to dry it, especially when working outside, it would be best to use a squeegee because that can get the window dryer faster than with a conventional cloth. Besides, if you are using a waterpole, you can’t very well reach up with a cloth to dry it. And even if you do you a ladder, using a cloth while on a ladder is risky because you have to extend out so far and keep using back and forth strokes to make sure you wiped up all the water and moisture you can.

When you clean regular windows, you simply go over the whole window as you normally do. However, what if the window is made a special way and it does not open the standard way, or you can’t clean the top and bottom part because the way the window was made? There is a way to clean this type of window to. Many homes have what is known as a double-hung window. Double-hung windows have an upper and lower sash, each one moving vertically in separate channels. Each sash is separated by a parting strip. Both slashes have meeting rails attached to them and they meet at a slant.

To clean these types of windows, you need a roll of paper towels, a can of WD-40, a selection of Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers and window cleaning solution. In these cases, you will need to remove the screws that hold the locks in place. When you do this, carefully slide the window up and out so the meeting rails separate. At this time you can safely remove the upper window followed by the lower window. Then take the window cleaner and paper towels and clean both sides of the window thoroughly. Do this for both the top and bottom window. When you are done replace the windows and screw the lock. Before you finish the job, spray some WD-40 to lubricate the lock for easier use if gummed up or sticky.

We will never know who was the first person to cover a window with a piece of leather or woven cloth, but the practical application of window coverings has, over time, evolved into a major factor when decorating a room. Draperies still perform their necessary function of keeping out the heat from the sun and keeping in the warmth and cool within the room, but their function has become much more than that. Windows in our rooms are the windows through which we view our world. The way draperies frame our windows influences the way we see the world. Draperies are much more than window coverings and much more than window adornments. They quietly speak volumes about our sense of style and personal taste.

By definition, draperies are any piece of cloth or other material that is arranged in loose, flowing folds around a window or doorway. Most draperies hang straight toward the floor, but many are draped over the window opening and arranged in “puddles” of cloth on the floor. Draperies are most often cloth, but can also be made from other materials.

There are many types of curtains and draperies, not including blinds and awnings. However, there are three main types of draperies and the functions they perform. Sash curtains are designed to filter light but to allow some of it to shine into the room. These curtains are typically sheer or of a very loose weave which allows light to shine through. Draw curtains block out light and insulate the room from the heat and cold outside the window. Over-draperies are designed to frame and compliment the sash or draw curtains underneath and are for more decorative than functional purposes.

Over-draperies also come in a variety of styles. Valances, cornices, and other toppers are shorter versions of their longer cousins and their purpose is to hide or decorate the hardware which is the foundation for all the draperies on a window. Some over-draperies are edged with ruffles or lace which form a jabot. Swags are less formal curtains which add color and texture to the main draperies.

On some windows, the drapery rods, poles, rings and finials are designed to be seen, as well as to add an additional decorative element to the overall appearance of the window. Finials are most often a shaped or sculptured ornament at each end of a drapery rod, but can also be softer accents, such as tassels, which accent the end of the rod.

The style and design of the room will almost always dictate the style of draperies that will adorn the windows. Formal rooms such as dining or living rooms, and even entryways will often have the most exquisite draperies in a home. Since these are the rooms in which families most often entertain, we often pay the most attention to the decorative elements in these rooms. Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and bedrooms are typically more casual. Therefore, the draperies for these rooms and the draperies on the windows in them, will, by necessity, be more casual.

We do most of our living, laughing and loving in the more casual corners of our homes and these rooms most often reflect our ideas of what living is all about. So our more formal rooms will have the most extravagant draperies and our less formal areas will have a more comfortable appeal.

As funny as it sounds, draperies are often a very accurate indicator of a family’s financial stability. College students, newly married couples and young families often have other, more pressing financial obligations than draperies. However, as the family moves forward toward financial independence, luxuries such as fine draperies become more important. The beautiful, flowing fabrics, decorative valances, and finials seem to quietly remind the world that a family has moved beyond the basic necessities of life and on to the simple luxuries that create a warm and inviting space.

Depending on the style of the window, measuring for the draperies planned for that window will be different. When replacing existing draperies with a similar style, it is easy to measure the existing panels and duplicate those measurements for each window treatment.

For styles that will be contained within the frame of the window, measurements will all be taken inside the window frame. For these window treatments, measurements should be taken inside the frame, across the width of the window at the top, middle and bottom of the window. Measurements for the length should also be taken at the left and right sides of the frame, and in the middle if the window is especially wide. No window frame is exactly true and draperies that will hang inside the window frame should be no longer than the shortest measurement.

For draperies that will hang outside the window frame, measurements will be taken according to the size of the window, the desired length of the curtain, and the width of the rod upon which the curtains will hang. If draperies are to just brush the floor, but not “puddle” at the sides of the window, then the method of measuring at both sides and in the middle of the opening, all the way to the floor, should be employed. When measuring width for a curtain rod that does not wrap to the wall, then the width of the rod is all that is necessary, but if the intended curtain rod bends and touches the wall, then the two wrapping edges must also be included in all measurements for the width of those draperies. Draperies that will hang outside the window frame can often be purchased in standard sizes, such as 63”, 84” and 102” lengths.

Typically, the longer the length, the more formal the draperies will appear. Shorter lengths give a more informal or casual appearance.

To avoid water damage and fading, draperies should be treated regularly by dusting them, either with the upholstery attachment or brush wand of a vacuum cleaner. If drapes are dusted in this way on a regular basis, fewer dry cleaning or laundering treatments will be necessary and the life of the draperies will be extended.

If more than dusting is required, care should be taken to follow the fabric care label sewn into the hem of the draperies. If the label is missing or unreadable, a dry cleaning professional should be consulted. When in doubt, dry cleaning is the safest method advisable. Even hand washing can damage delicate fabrics.

If the fabric care label allows for hand washing, avoid wringing them out, which can cause permanent wrinkling. Drip or line drying them, then pressing with a warm or cool iron is recommended. If machine washing is permissible, follow the fabric care label precisely to avoid fading or other fabric damage. When machine washing, avoid overloading the bin, which can cause excess wrinkles and even tearing.

If it is allowable to machine dry the draperies, dry them only until they are just damp and then hang to finish drying. The weight of the drapes and the small amount of moisture still in them will help hang out some wrinkles.
