The wedding cake has been a tradition since Roman times when the cake was crumbled over the head of the bride as a symbol of fertility. Today, we have different traditions honored by the bride and groom.
• Cutting the cake – The cutting of the cake takes place during the reception where the bride and groom cut the cake together. The groom places his right hand over the bride’s right hand and together they cut into the bottom layer of the cake. Before the guests are served, the groom feeds a piece to the bride who then feeds the groom. This tradition is a symbol the couple’s willingness to share a household.
• Saving the top layer – Saving the top layer of the wedding cake to be eaten on their first anniversary is another wedding tradition. The cake should be carefully wrapped and kept frozen. When ready to eat, thaw the cake for 48 hours and then leave at room temperature for two days for a fresh tasting cake.
• Cake under a pillow – The tradition is that all single people attending the wedding take a piece of the bridal cake home to be placed under their pillow. This is to lead to dreaming of their future spouse. There are decorative boxes that can be purchased to send a small piece of cake home with the guests.
