When choosing a wedding cake, there are the considerations of size, style, and flavor. Traditionally, wedding cakes have always had at least three tiers of fruit cake, Royal icing, and a bride and groom topper. Today, there are many creations from which to choose. The trend has changed to chocolate in many forms, such as Mississippi mud, chocolate biscuit, hazelnut, and even chocolate ice cream cakes. There is no right or wrong decision when selecting your cake, whatever makes the bride and groom happy is what should be served.

Traditionally, cakes have come in round or square shapes. Today, cakes come in hexagon, oval, and heart shape, just to name a few. You may want the traditional stacked cake where layer after layer is stacked upon each other. Cakes can be tiered on columns from three to seven or more tiers. Tiers may be stacked or off-set for a more modern look.

The plastic bride and groom topper is not as popular as in the past. Today, cakes are being topped with fresh or edible flowers, sugared fruit, and ribbon.

The groom’s cake began as a symbol of the couple’s sweet life together. Generally, the groom’s cake is ordered at the same time and place as the wedding cake as a gift from the bride to the groom. However, the groom may choose to select his own cake which can be served at the reception or the rehearsal dinner. Groom’s cakes may reflect the interest or hobbies of the groom such as, putting greens, hunting, fishing, or cakes that reflect favorite sporting teams are also popular.
