If you are not using a caterer and want to order from a baker, visit several before making a final choice. Try to get referrals from any friends or family members who may have used bakers recently. You can also ask the florist, wedding coordinators, photographers, or anyone in the wedding business for a referral. They all see many weddings a year and should have good suggestions. Make an appointment to spend some time talking with the baker, looking at photos and design books, and sampling their work. Most bakers are very busy on Thursdays through Saturdays preparing for weddings.
You will need to supply the baker with the following information regarding your wedding:
• The date and time of the wedding.
• The location of the reception.
• The lighting of the reception room.
• The number of expected guests.
• The color theme for your wedding.
• Types of linens being used.
• The names of your florist, caterer, and wedding coordinator.
• Will you also want a groom’s cake?
There are also many questions you will want to ask bakers before selecting the one that is right for your wedding:
• How far in advance do you need to order the cake? If your wedding is a summer wedding, you may have to order up to six months prior.
• How much of a deposit is required at the time you order? Most bakers require you to make a substantial deposit at the time of ordering.
• How are the cakes priced? Most professionals will work around your budget. Wedding cakes are typically priced per slice, starting at $2.00 per serving depending on the part of the country you live in and the type of cake you desire.
• Are items such as stands, pillars, and boxes included in the price of the cake?
• Discuss delivery instructions and get an understanding as to whether they deliver or if you must pick up the cake. If they deliver, do they charge a fee for delivery and set-up?
• Ask to see photos of their past work and design books.
• Ask to sample some of the cake choices.
