It is your decision as to what your DJ will be in your wedding. Some people want their DJ to simply play music in the background and provide Public Announcement equipment for announcements and speeches made during the reception. Others may want to place the DJ in charge of making sure the wedding reception go as smoothly as possible, so that you don’t have to worry about anything. This is all your decision to make and is part of the interview process. The major role that a DJ plays in most weddings is a mixer of music. This is pretty easy, and most experienced DJ’s will be able to do this without thinking.

The second role that is most important to many people who are looking for a stress-free wedding reception is a master of ceremonies. Most DJ’s that have done many weddings are experienced MC’s as well. The DJ will make sure the timing of everything goes smoothly and that the specific announcements by the parents, best man, maid of honor, and any others are presented in a timely manner. He will also, under direction of the wedding party, tell when the cutting of the cake and the throwing of the bouquet happen. A DJ must also be a person skilled with public relations and diplomacy. Many people will come up to DJ with special requests that they think are the best, but those may not fit with your ideas. A DJ must be able to handle these requests with tact yet help maintain the level of culture that you want in your wedding. At the same time, a DJ must not become the center of attention. That is your job. He is there to facilitate that attention. If a DJ comes off cocky during an interview, recognize that as a danger for the way he will act later.
