There are several people and places that you will need to make sure and make the necessary changes to your identification to make it official, or legal. Make sure that you are well aware of your particular state’s guidelines and regulations when it comes to changing your name because these can and will vary with each state. Here is a checklist of the main items that will require you to change your name after marriage:
• Social security card- this is a key item to take care of first. There are a lot of places that require a copy of your social security card as proof of your name change. Therefore, it will be to your advantage to complete this change first.
• Bank accounts
• Investment accounts
• Any memberships you have- movie rental places, health clubs, etc.
• At work- medical and dental plans, as well as your 401(k)
• Credit Cards
• Doctor and Dental Office Records
• Driver’s License (most DMV’s will also take care of your voter’s registration at this time also), automobile registration and insurance
• Any Bills- utilities, etc.
• Mortgages
Pretty much anything that has your name on it needs to be updated. There are a number of places that you will have as an individual that may not be on this list. You’ll probably have things that continue to come up for months that require your name change, so be prepared. A lot of times, to facilitate these changes, companies will ask to see a copy of your wedding license. You will need an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate from your local or state government agency. This is typically mailed to a new couple within one or two weeks of their wedding, but you should verify this for your particular area to make changes smoother. One way to be prepared for the unexpected is to keep a copy of your marriage license with you right after you get married for a reasonable amount of time.
