» Where does Virginia fit in the states? - Virginia's Geography
Virginia is traditionally considered to be a Southern state, though also often classified as one of the Mid-Atlantics. It is surrounded by West Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC to the north, North Carolina and Tennessee to the south, West Virginia and Kentucky to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay to the east.
When thinking about the different areas of Virginia, you can usually divide it into five general regions:
• Tidewater. This is the Eastern Bay area all along the Atlantic coast.
• Piedmont. West of the Tidewater region to the Eastern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains is considered Piedmont.
• Blue Ridge Mountains. This region extends from these mountains west to the Appalachians.
• Valley and Ridge. Including the Appalachian Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley, this is thought by some to be the most beautiful Virginia region.
• Appalachian Plateau. This is a small southwest region in Virginia extending west of the Appalachians.
