Resting on the banks of Lake Champlain, Burlington is Vermont’s largest city. In 2003, Self magazine named Burlington the “healthiest city in America.” It has become a popular place to relocate, and the rising housing prices reflect that trend. Three and four bedroom homes in nearby neighborhoods can start in the $400s and quickly reach toward one million. Better values can be found in the surrounding counties, such as Franklin and Addison.

Montpelier (Vermont’s capitol) and Barre are slightly more reasonable in terms of housing costs. The ski village of Stowe has single-family homes starting in the high $300s. There are also condominium options in the $100s and $200s, which are popular second home purchases.

The Champlain Islands region is a growing area of Vermont. Housing prices has increased significantly in recent years, and homes in the Swanton area have now hit $300,000 to $400,000 for a three bedroom.

The most affordable housing in Vermont is in the less populated Northeast Kingdom. Three-bedroom ranch style homes can be found for under $200,000 in the hub city of Newport.
