Day Three

If historical towns and villages interest you, some of the best in the state are yet to come. Plan to spend day three exploring Brattleboro, Putney, Newfane, Townshend, Chester, and Grafton. The order is up to you.

If you are traveling south to north, your journey begins in Brattleboro. Grab a sandwich at the Brattleboro Food Co-op. There are plenty of great picnic spots in the next leg of your journey. Head north on I-91 and make Putney your next stop. It is the epitome of an artist’s village, and its carefree quality makes for pleasant strolling. Stop by Vermont Shepherd Cheese to sample and purchase some of the best cheeses in New England. If your sandwich didn’t fill you up (or even if it did), grab some ribs at Curtis Bar-B-Q before you hit the road toward Newfane.

The National Historic District in Newfane is a collection of 60 buildings around the town green and down a few of the side streets. You can pick up a walking-tour brochure at the Moore Free Library or the Historical Society of Windham County (itself a lovely museum to wander through). On Route 30 between Townshend and Jamaica is the Scott Covered Bridge, which dates back to 1870. It is the longest single-span bridge in the state, and seeing it makes for a quintessentially Vermont experience. Finish your tour of southeastern Vermont in Grafton, a lovingly preserved village that feels like a throwback from another era.
