Day Four

The fact that much of the town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places should be enough to tell you that Woodstock is one you should not miss. It is perhaps Vermont’s finest example of old world charm and grace. It is home to some of the state’s wealthiest individuals, which consequenty means fine homes and gourmet dining.

Try lunch at Bentley’s, which offers upscale burgers and sandwiches. Explore the town green and stop by the Woodstock Historical Society, housed in a period home. Nearby, the Billings Farm and Museum allows visitors to glimpse into the past with demonstrations of farm activities and farm life in the 19th century. It is a fun stop for kids and adults.

Five miles east of Woodstock is Quechee Gorge, formed some 13,000 years ago. You can hike to the bottom of the gorge and back in under an hour. A few miles away in Norwich is the Montshire Museum of Science, with great, interactive exhibits. It is another family-friendly activity not to be missed.

Some of the best lodging options in Central Vermont are located in Woodstock. The Jackson House Inn is located five minutes west of the center of town. The innkeepers offer evening hors d’oeuvres and champagne, which you can enjoy in the formal English garden. Three Church St. is a less-expensive choice, offering a cozy family experience (complete with shared bathrooms, something to keep in mind).
