Complete the one-day itinerary and add the following…

Leave Manchester and drive east through the Green Mountains. If outdoors pursuits interest you, you will find them here: biking, camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing and more. You can spend your entire second day enjoying Vermont’s open air. If the towns and villages interest you more, some of the best in the state are yet to come.

Your trek through the southeastern part of the state begins in Brattleboro. Grab a sandwich at the Brattleboro Food Co-op. There are plenty of great picnic spots in the next leg of your journey.

Head north on I-91 and make Putney your next stop. It is the epitome of an artist’s village, and its carefree quality makes for pleasant strolling. Stop by Vermont Shepherd Cheese to sample and purchase some of the best cheeses in New England. If you are hungry, grab some ribs at Curtis Bar-B-Q before you hit the road toward Newfane.

The National Historic District in Newfane is a collection of 60 buildings around the town green and down a few of the side streets. You can pick up a walking-tour brochure at the Moore Free Library or the Historical Society of Windham County (itself a lovely museum to wander through). This part of Route 30 is home of a couple of dozen antique shops, if that interests you. Also on Route 30 between Townshend and Jamaica is the Scott Covered Bridge, which dates back to 1870. It is the longest single-span bridge in the state. Finish your tour of southeastern Vermont in Grafton, a lovingly preserved village that feels like a throwback from another era as a result. Stay and dine in one of the inns or bed-and-breakfasts that caught your eye during the day.
