Complete the one-day and two-day itineraries and add the following…

Leaving southeastern Vermont, head north. Enjoy the drive and try to arrive in Woodstock around lunch. Try lunch at Bentley’s, which offers upscale burgers and sandwiches. Explore the town green and stop by the Woodstock Historical Society, housed in a period home. Reluctantly say goodbye to the charming Woodstock, and make a decision to head to either Montpelier to visit Vermont’s capitol or Burlington to explore its largest city.

Perhaps the most quaintly picturesque state capitol in the entire United States, Montpelier is refined and congenial. You can tour the State House and dine at Main Street Grill and Bar or Chef’s Table, both operated by the New England Culinary Institute. Nearby Waterbury is home to the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory. They offer fun and inexpensive tours, including free samples. The Capitol Plaza Hotel and the Inn at Montpelier are two great options for lodging.

Burlington is part college town (it is home to the University of Vermont), part hippie hang-out, and part commercial suburbia. It is located on the banks of Lake Champlain and the northern New York Adirondack mountains. There is a bustling downtown area with a lovely pedestrian mall.

Ardent history buffs should not miss Shelburne Museum (south of Burlington), a mind-bending collection of artifacts spread out in 37 buildings on 45 acres. There are displays of entire buildings, including a stagecoach inn and railroad station.

Back in Burlington, you can dine at another offering from the Culinary Institute, NECI Commons. Burlington also offers Bove’s, a classic and inexpensive Italian favorite, and Leunig’s Bistro, with a continental menu offering a little bit of everything. Stay the night at the Wyndham Burlington, a modern nine-story hotel built in the 1970s, or Willard Street Inn, located just a few minutes (on foot) from the University of Vermont campus.
