The college town of Middlebury offers a few inexpensive motels on its outskirts, one of which is the Greystone Motel. Most rooms are under $100/night. The federal style home that houses the Inn on the Green is featured on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located three blocks from the campus of Middlebury College. Nearby is the Waybury Inn of Newhart fame. It is the characteristic New England inn featured in the exterior shots of the classic sitcom.
For skiing in this part of the state, try the Sugarbush Resort condos in the Mad River Valley. The Inn at Mad River Barn is a classic, 60s ski lodge, offering basic accommodations at a great price. The Pitcher Inn in Warren is a fine, fine property, supplying guests with an elegant and fanciful inn experience. If you are skiing in the northern town of Stowe, try the Stowe Motel for a good value or Topnotch for an upscale ski lodge experience.
Capitol city Montpelier has a couple of great choices. The Capitol Plaza Hotel is the common choice for visiting government officials. It is located across from the capitol building, providing a convenient and efficient choice. The Inn at Montpelier is comprised of two stately, historic buildings, both constructed as residences during the town’s early settlement.
Traveling north, you will find the Basin Harbor Club, one of Vermont’s finest resorts. Located 30 miles south of Burlington, it sits on 700 breathtaking acres and even boasts its own private airstrip (giving you an idea of the clientele). This is truly an all-inclusive property. You can easily fill your vacation days without ever leaving the resort.
If you are basing your Vermont vacation out of Burlington, there are options for travelers in every price range. Several chain motels including Holiday Inn Express and Howard Johnson are located along Route 7. In the heart of Burlington’s downtown is the Wyndham Burlington, a modern nine-story hotel built in the 1970s. The Willard Street Inn is located just a few minutes (on foot) from the University of Vermont campus.
Leaving Burlington and heading into the relatively wild and untamed Champlain Islands and Northeast Kingdom, the choices become more limited and farther apart. Shore Acres is located on leafy and verdant farmland, and some of the rooms are situated on the lake. Inn on the Common in Craftsbury Common is comprised of three Federal-style buildings. It is a great spot for cross-country ski vacations.
