The first people to inhabit the area that is known today as Salt Lake City were the Anasazi Indians and the Ute tribe during the years 1 A.D. to 1300. The Ute tribe is where the state of Utah gets its name. Navajo Indians also called the area home.
Salt Lake City was officially founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young. The group settled into the area now known as Salt Lake City with 143 men, 3 women, and 2 children.
