In 1869 Utah became connected to both the east and the west with the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The completion of the railroad began Utah’s lucrative mining industry. Utah became home to several hundred lead, copper, silver, and gold mines. Ore was also refined through giant smelters. Mining is still a large industry for the state of Utah. The completion of the railroad helped Salt Lake City gain its nickname as the Crossroads of the West.
