What is a training seminar?

Put simply, a training seminar is an attempt to equip employees to better do their jobs. This training can equip them professionally, ethically, or relationally, but in any case, it is an attempt to give employees the tools they need to excel in a particular aspect of their work.

Training seminars are distinct from informal training because of the format which they use. Informal training is often one-on-one training on equipment or casual instruction on company policy. In contrast, training seminars are offered to large groups of employees at a time and employ tools such as speakers and videos as well as employee interaction. A 1995 study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average employee in companies with fifty or more workers received an average of 7.4 hours of training per month, of which 2.2 hours were formal training.

The most common kinds of training seminars are classes or workshops conducted by company personnel. In addition, some training seminars are run by outside trainers at the workplace or at lectures or conferences off-site. Universities or community colleges also often offer continuing education that falls in this category as well. Some of these types of seminars are designed for employees of a specific company while others are open to employees with similar positions from many different companies.

Training seminars are more necessary in some fields than others, but the goal is always the same: to instruct and to equip the trainees.
