What follow-up should I do after a training seminar?

The most important follow-up to training is to model the right behavior day in and day out. Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, said, “Success in training the boy depends largely on the Scoutmaster’s own personal example.” If you ignore the material you learned in training, those around you will do the same. If you embrace, those around you will likely follow suit.

In addition, provide outlets for trainees to provide feedback or ask for more help. Were there particular topics that they did not understand or on which they need more training? Were there topics they felt did not need to be included in training?

Throughout the year, keep a close eye on your workplace and observe areas in which your employees struggle and then provide training in that area in the future. Are your employees slowed down by computers? Have you had problems with people stealing from the company? Have you had multiple complaints from customers? Recognize these issues and design a training seminar with them in mind. Training seminars need not be long ordeals; they can be short, focused, discussions on particular topics. The goal is not to overwhelm or amaze employees, but simply to train them.
