In what situations within my own team will I use negotiation training skills?

Usually, when we think of negotiation, we think of situations between two companies or two countries, or perhaps between a business and a customer. In reality, though, negotiation only requires two parties—in many cases, two opposing parties. With this in mind, it is important to remember that the inside of the workplace itself is a place of continual negotiation. Some negotiation training workshops will deal specifically with these issues while others will not, but in either case, the negotiation skills learned can assist the workplace negotiator.

Perhaps the most noticeable need for negotiation in the workplace appears in the form of conflict resolution. Just because people work together, don’t expect them to get along, whether it is a spat between two co-workers or a rift between management and labor or a threatened lawsuit. Negotiation training will focus the negotiator on how to resolve this conflict through listening and talking to both sides and helping them meet in the middle. What will each side be willing to give and accept in order to resolve the conflict? Will the two sides be willing to apologize? How will the individuals move past this disagreement and avoid it in the future? Negotiation training can help the negotiator discover this area.

Another frequent area of business negotiation is negotiations between management and labor over topics such as wages and incentives. How should you request a raise from your superiors? What kinds of incentives should you use to motivate your team? Can you agree on a pay scale that is acceptable to all employees? Again, these may be issues specifically addressed at some negotiation training seminars or the trainee may need to use skills such as people reading in order to negotiate on these issues.
