What is a keynote speaker?

A keynote speaker is the person who delivers the primary speech, or the keynote address, at an event or a program. High school graduations, presidential inaugurations, professional organization conferences, local civic club meetings—all of these have keynote speakers.

There are many types and purposes for keynote speakers. Some companies bring in keynote speakers to motivate employees. Others organizations have speakers who inform or persuade listeners on a certain topic. Some keynote speakers are brought in as part of an event or conference, while other speakers are invited strictly to speak about whatever they wish. Some speakers are experts in the field they discuss, while others are brought in for their personality more than their expertise.

George Jessel said, “The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.” Fortunately, keynote speakers are those people who seem to have less trouble in this area. A good keynote speaker will draw in the audience, carry them along throughout a speech, and leave them informed or even inspired about a particular topic or idea.
