How should I use a keynote speaker as part of an event?

Depending on the event and the speaker, you may want to build up the speech as the high point of the event. Consider doing promotion for emphasizing the keynote speaker. If possible, obtain an informative and catchy title for the speech from the keynote speaker. Use word of mouth, the Internet, or mailings to inform the intended audience about the keynote speaker and his expertise. You can also involve the local media. Work with the speaker to ensure that both sides are satisfied with promotion of the event.

Think about how you want the keynote speaker to fit into the rest of your program. If there are other speakers or sessions, how do they lead up to and build upon the remarks of the keynote speaker? If the speaker is leading a workshop with several sessions, do the sessions easily tie together? Do you need someone from your team to make these connections or will the speaker do it himself?

Finally, don’t forget to do follow-up on your keynote speaker. Get feedback from your audience to see how they responded to the speaker and what they took away from the address. Check with the speaker to see if he/she has any suggestions for you. If the speech seemed especially impacting, refer back to it throughout the year for continuing motivation or information.

A keynote speaker is often the focal point of a meeting or conference, so do everything in your power to make sure that part goes well. Then allow the speaker to do their job.
