How does Leadership Training integrate communication development?

Effective communication is the soul of interpersonal skills and thus crucial for leaders; it is also a skill that has to be developed, perfected, and practiced habitually. Most business people have fairly effective communication skills, until they find themselves in circumstances which undermine their competence – situations which have the potential to lead to unhelpful behavior. Unfortunately, people in leadership will have to deal with these conflicts regularly. Fortunately, there is a preparation tool – Leadership Training.

Because so much of good leadership is based on effective communication, it is treated seriously in Leadership Training. By preparing for various work dynamics and both common and unexpected problems, a leader can learn to be confident in a situation in which he or she doesn’t always feel comfortable. It also addresses the need to learn how to motivate and inspire others. Being an effective communicator means that others take you seriously and are influenced by what you have to say. Leadership Training helps people learn to deal with other people with confidence, assurance, and authenticity.

Effective communication skills developed in leadership training include the following:

Understanding Body Language

Working with Different Points of View

Developing Great Listening and Responding Skills

Managing Conflict

Using Positive Reinforcement

Developing Strengths

Anita Roddik said, “We communicate with passion, and passion persuades.” The effective leader understands the power of communication. In order to better the communication, and thus leadership, in your company, schedule a Leadership Training seminar.

How do I acquire Leadership Training for my company?

Once you have realized how beneficial Leadership Training will be for you and your company, your question will probably be “Where do I find Leadership Training?” or as the title ponders, “How do I acquire Leadership Training for my Company?” Good question! Leadership Training is available in many places and in various forms.

The first method of obtaining Leadership Training is to hire a trainer. An individual specializing in Leadership Training can easily be located by running a simple internet search or checking the phone book. The library is also a tremendous source of information regarding both well-known and lesser-known Leadership Training experts.
If a live trainer is not available or too expensive, a virtual Leadership Training session is the next option. Seminars and simulations of real situations are available for the convenience of the company needing Leadership Training. If there is an individual who perhaps has gone through the training previously and can help lead, a video series is a viable option. If there is not, consider e-learning, an online series of sessions in which a professional leads the training from another computer at some other location.
In addition to these options, you may choose to use Leadership Training books or a tape series. While these two alternatives may take more work on the part of the individual leading the seminar, they can be less expensive and more flexible regarding time.
The most important element of Leadership Training is that you do schedule it. How you do so and what form you choose to use in acquiring the training is a detail to be decided based on your company’s specific needs. When you decide the time is right for your company’s leaders to learn more about communication, motivation, and gaining the confidence of their employees, use one of the previously mentioned methods and acquire Leadership Training for you and your management.

What are Learning Management Systems?

To stay competitive in a global market, individual companies must be informed and trained to respond to marketplace trends. Consistency of training across borders can no longer be maintained by training sessions held in the break room. Multi-lingual, web-based training that is available no matter what time of the day (or night), is one of the best answers to a corporations training dilemma.

Learning management systems (LMS’s) is a term that covers a wide variety of training options and tools. LMS’s include web-based training modules, stand-alone computer programs, component packages that can be uploaded onto the Local Area Network (LAN), and even include digital classrooms which can be “attended” from anywhere in the world.

These powerful training tools can be automated enough to prompt employees to participate in training during times of low volume work or can be self-actuated from individual desktop systems. Once in place they can be used for classes, independent training courses, and for tracking successful completion of the training course. They can, and should, be linked to the corporation’s primary business goals and should keep up with current market trends with as much self-governing as possible.

Learning management systems are known by many different names, such as a Managed Learning Environment (MLE), Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Course Management System (CMS), Learning Support System (LSS), Electronic Learning System (ELS), or Learning Platform (LP). VLE’s, MLE’s, and LP’s are terms used in the United Kingdom in reference to programs used in the school system, while LMS’s and CMS’s are more popular names in the United States and refer to business-related software used in corporate training programs. Learning management systems and the software used in those systems are often used to make training classes available to individual employees, track the employee’s progress in that training, scoring, and certification.

To get started, a company must have basic communications tools such as computers, high speed internet access, and network security to protect both corporate and individual privacy. Other tools such as PDA’s, phone and computer conferencing capabilities are also helpful.

How can Learning Management Systems assist with employee training?

Some tasks are well suited to Learning Management Systems, while others are not. Learning is accomplished individually and is a process. That process is what Learning Management Systems seek to quantify. Because of the cost, Learning Management Systems aren’t designed for small companies with few employees, but rather for large corporations and government agencies whose existence is based on the need to stay current.

When rules and laws change in a particular geographic area, a Learning Management System can be used to produce training for those employees working in that program area. Multi-lingual training can be provided for offices in as many cities as is necessary for a global corporation with staff on several continents. A Learning Management System, normally used for employee training, can also be used to inform partners, educate suppliers and customers.

When e-learning and traditional classroom settings are blended, all learning styles can be addressed, increasing the value of the training. Connecting the dots between departments can streamline learning and reduce overall training budgets. Learning Management Systems should be based on long-term corporate goals, but be linked to the HR department and overseen by the accounting department, thus integrating the system into every department.

Another, more informal use of Learning Management Systems would include conferencing and
chat
capabilities which can be used for assessments and project evaluations both during and after project deadlines.

What should I look for in a Learning Management System?

Deciding which Learning Management System is right for your company is critical. The first step is to evaluate corporate goals and answer this one question, “What do we need the Learning Management System to do?” The answer to that question will start you on the path toward choosing which features and what your future needs will be.

Consider whether or not the system can grow with you as your company expands and changes and evaluate each possibility while asking these questions:

Do you have the necessary equipment and IT personnel to oversee and maintain what you need, or would a contract with a Learning Management System supplier be a better beginning?

Can the Learning Management System grow with you?

Is it user-friendly? Lost productivity because of the difficulty of operating the training program defeats the purpose of the training, so keep it simple enough to operate much the same as navigating the internet.

Is it secure enough to handle sensitive issues such as employee relations issues, workplace safety, or upcoming sales promotions?

Is the system stable enough to self-monitor or will it require an IT team to keep it running? Depending upon your company’s needs, you may choose a Learning Management System that is outsourced and managed by the supplier, or in-house and set up to self-govern as each individual participates in each training module.

Is it flexible? Can new training modules be added as they become necessary?

Will it be cost effective? E-learning can reduce travel expenses, individual teaching time, and space rental fees for large group training sessions. Comparing these expenses to what the Learning Management System will cost to start up and maintain may help you decide which LMS is the most equitable solution to your training needs.

What are some uses for Learning Management Systems?

Learning Management Systems can be used to assist with:

Distance Learning - The ease and availability of computerized Learning Management Systems makes them ideal for distance learning.

Supplier Information –Suppliers can have the most accurate and up to date information in order to provide exactly the right products or services.

Customer Recruitment – Sales force members can produce consistent presentations, customized for different target audiences.

Employee Assessments – Training is an essential step toward reaching goals set during regular Employee Assessments. Providing that training through a Learning Management System gives employees the tools to self-actuate those goals.

Quantifying sales force readiness for new product introduction – Through training and evaluation of the knowledge and expertise gained during that training, management can predict the readiness of employees to take that knowledge to customers.

Multiple levels of learning within one training module – Partners, Management, Sales Representatives, Production personnel, and support staff can all train in a single area, with specific levels of information and expertise toward a common goal.

Identify through grouped scoring areas where further training is needed – Evaluating both individual and group readiness to progress toward the next goal is an essential benefit of a Learning Management System.

Employee tracking toward regular Assessment goals – By placing the training tools at their fingertips, management can enable employees to progress toward mutually agreed upon goals.

Are all Learning Management Systems the same?

There are many types of Learning Management Systems. Commercial LMS’s are available as software packages that can be purchased then personalized to meet corporate needs. There are Learning Management Systems used primarily in higher education at the university level such as Class Central, Blackboard, and eCollege. There are also systems designed for use in the k-12 arena such as Lotus Learning Space, Skillsoft and Gradepoint.

Just as there are freeware software packages for almost every conceivable use, freeware also exists in the Learning Management System world. Moodle, Atutor, and Dokeos are just a few examples of freeware that is available. Freeware packages are often used by educators operating under tight budget constraints.

When choosing a Learning Management System, it is important to choose a system which offers a variety of training options, is self-automated, and that can support growth for a number of years.

Don’t forget to evaluate installation, initial training in the use of the Learning Management System, and its ongoing support when making a decision about which LMS is right for you. Will the use of the chosen Learning Management System require a large purchase of computer equipment to be effective? Building a system to meet future needs based on current technology holdings can be tricky, but a well-planned strategy for continued growth beginning with what you have today is a good start.

What is Event and Conference planning?

Events and conferences offer opportunities to educate potential customers about important issues, explain your business and the services you offer, or celebrate a momentous occasion in the life of your business.
Whether it's a company anniversary, holiday party, important client meeting or product launch, business events require planning a lot of details. While some companies prefer to handle the planning internally, others may choose to hire a professional event planner. Regardless of your choice, it's important to have a coordinator or committee working hard well in advance of the event.

Tasks to be handled for an event or conference include:

Defining a purpose and vision for the event.

Setting goals for the event.

Researching other successful events.

Writing a plan and timeline.

Determining the budget for your event.

Finding a site.

Organizing food, décor and entertainment.

Planning transportation and lodging.

Printing and sending invitations.

Promoting and advertising the event.

Supervising during the event.

Evaluating the event after it is completed.

How do I develop a plan for my Event or Conference?

The first step in planning an event or conference is to determine a purpose for the event. Why are you holding the event? What do you hope it will accomplish? Who would you like to attend the event? Why should people come to the event? Answering these basic questions will help you lay a foundation for the event, from which you will be able to build all of the details. It is important to remember the answers to these questions - which will become your purpose and goals - throughout the planning so you do not lose sight of the vision.

Then it's time to work out all of the details that will allow you to accomplish your purpose. First, set a budget. The amount of money that you have to spend on items will determine many things so it's important to know what funds you are working with early in the planning process.

Then develop your timeline. Set deadlines for each step, leaving time for the unforeseen hurdles that inevitably crop up throughout the process.

Now it's time to jump into the details. Set a date. Find a location. Determine who your attendees will be and how it is best to reach them with information about the event (direct mail, advertising, media coverage, partnerships with other organizations, newsletters, e-mails, etc.).

Once your event is over, it is easy to rest on your laurels and forget about it until next time. But it is highly valuable to bring together all the people involved in planning shortly after the event for a follow-up meeting. What worked? What didn't? Take detailed notes so that the next time you set out to plan this event or another, you can remember what to change and what not to change.

For conferences, asking attendees to complete surveys can help in planning for future years. Survey questions could include:

What sessions and presenters did you appreciate and why?

Were the accommodations comfortable?

What offerings would you like to see in the future?

What speakers would you recommend for the future?

What dates and locations would be best for future events?

How did you learn about the conference?

How do I see to all the details of my Event or Conference?

Planning is crucial to ensuring that every detail is attended to before the event. Checklists, timelines and budgets must be set up in a format that is user-friendly and easy to adapt as you progress. Ensure that checklists are specific and include every task that must be completed. Ask people who perform jobs in certain areas to make checklists that can be given to the person responsible next year.

Remember that working in advance is crucial. Most events require at least three months to a year or preparation. Do as much ahead of time as possible.

Ensure that you have a coordinator who is equipped to make final decisions. Planning by committee can be a great team experience, but in the end, there must be someone with whom the final decision rests. This will allow you to avoid long conversations and meetings which result in no decisions.

Delegate responsibilities to people with expertise in certain areas. Allow them to use their gifts to make your event successful, but be sure they check back in with the coordinator regularly to ensure that all the plans fit together.
Plan to have several people on hand to supervise the day of the event. The coordinator cannot be everywhere at once, so he or she will need a team of people helping.

How do I promote my Conference or Event?

There are many ways to promote your event, regardless of your budget. The key to promotion is finding your audience. Who am I trying to reach and what's the best way to reach them? All of your efforts will get you nowhere if you are spending your time and energy inviting teachers to a medical conference.

E-mail can be effective for some audience, but consider that with spam filters and full inboxes, the invitation or promotional e-mail might never be read. Follow up your e-mails with paper invitations sent via regular mail. If you require RSVPs, be prepared to call those people who you do not get responses from.

Direct mail can be an effective means of contacting people if you have access to a mailing list. Also consider advertising in key publications that will reach your intended audience. Press releases also can be effective in garnering media attention in advance of your event.

Of course, sometimes word of mouth is the most effective strategy, coupled with other more formalized efforts. A personal face-to-face invitation can make the difference in someone's decision about whether to attend your event. Encourage those who have attended your event or conference in the past to invite new people.
