E-learning encompasses a variety of types of education, each one suited for different topics, people, timelines, prices, companies, and so on. Choosing the right mode for you or your company could mean the difference between success and something less. Here are a few of the different modes you might find available when looking to learn via technology:

Tutorials

Tutorials use a linear presentation of information, often in a guided format that gives plenty of opportunities for learning and interaction. A good tutorial helps the learner really grasp the concepts presented with a good pace, a chance to practice, and by giving something more than just information they could read on the page.

Assessments

Companies that offer e-learning, or even classes participants choose to enroll in, often employ automated testing or assessments to judge or grade comprehension, skill, or mastery of a subject. These tests can be used for self-assessment or can be graded by the computer and reported to a manager, instructor, or other administrator as part of a required training course.

Simulations

Simulations often provide life-like experiences to help participants learn more effectively. For example, some programs offer role-playing exercises to help participants learn how to handle specific situations essential to their job or other life skill they�re learning. A good simulation helps the participant reveal how he or she would react in a real-life situation, such as sales calls.

Another factor to consider is whether the course or educational material is instructor-led, self-study, performance management, or knowledge management. This means figuring out how much hand-holding you need, what your intent for learning is, how familiar you are with the subject beforehand, how in-depth the learning is, and so on.
