Spectator Sports

The city of San Antonio is home to one major league sports team, the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. The Spurs, who have been located in San Antonio since 1973, play their home games in the impressive AT&T Center. They have enjoyed great success, especially in recent years: they have won three NBA Championships since 1999. This is thanks in large part to Tim Duncan (“The Big Fundamental”) and the recently retired David Robinson (“The Admiral”).

The city did become the temporary home of another major professional team, the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League, in 2005. The team, unable to use its own facilities because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, practiced in San Antonio all season, and even played some of its games there.

Other sports teams include the San Antonio Silver Stars (Women’s National Basketball Association), the San Antonio Missions (Texas League; affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners), and the San Antonio Rampage (American Hockey League).

Performing Arts

San Antonio offers exciting opportunities to witness the performing arts, including theatre, music and dance.

There are numerous opportunities to take in good theatre in the city. The Lila Cockrell Theater, McAllister Auditorium, San Pedro Playhouse, The Sunken Garden Theatre, and The Josephine Theatre are all home to varying types of outstanding theatre and drama. The Majestic Theatre, a State and National Historic Landmark, is an actual vintage vaudeville movie palace. The Steven Stoli Backyard Theatre is unique in that it offers light drama and comedy for adults during the evenings and well-known children’s plays during the daytimes. The Magik Theatre and the Children’s Fine Art Series offer other opportunities for children to be involved in drama.

The Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra offers both new and classic jazz. The Alamo Metro Chorus is a barbershop chorus and part of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Many of the venues mentioned above house musical offerings as well as theatre opportunities. The San Antonio Mastersingers is a top-notch chorale that performs occasionally with the San Antonio Symphony. Young people can be involved in music in the city by being part of the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio or the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio. Popular concerts can be heard at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and the Alamadome, among other places. The San Antonio Dance Umbrella is dedicated to assisting dancers and increasing awareness of this beautiful art form.
