The city of San Antonio is home to only one major league sports team, the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. The Spurs, who have been located in San Antonio since 1973, play their home games in the impressive AT&T Center. They have enjoyed great success, especially in recent years: they have won three NBA Championships since 1999. This is thanks in large part to Tim Duncan (“The Big Fundamental”) and the recently retired David Robinson (“The Admiral”).
The city did become the temporary home of another major professional team, the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League, in 2005. The team, unable to use its own facilities because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, practiced in San Antonio all season, and even played some of its games there.
Other sports teams include the San Antonio Silver Stars (Women’s National Basketball Association), the San Antonio Missions (Texas League; affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners), and the San Antonio Rampage (American Hockey League).
