The Metro-Memphis area is comprised of five (5) counties: Shelby, Fayette, Tipton (Tennessee), Crittenden County (Arkansas), and Desoto County (Mississippi). This is a tremendous area and thus there are many different school systems contained within this area. These educational opportunities in the Memphis area make finding the right school as easy as ever! The number of public, private, parochial, and optional schools that are available give your family plenty of options from which to choose. The public school system in Shelby County is broken down into two distinct boards of education. The Memphis City School system, which is the 18th largest school system in the country with 191 schools in grades K-12 and the Shelby County School system which has more than 45,000 students and is the 4th largest district in the state of Tennessee. The Memphis City School system has 31 optional schools available within the system which offer students choices in program such as health sciences, international studies and college prep classes, as well as advanced placement classes for college credit. In 2004, the senior class was awarded close to $65 million in scholarships to different universities and colleges around the country. The Shelby County School system includes all of the public schools in the county outside the corporate limits of the city of Memphis, including incorporated towns of Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington. Enrollment has grown at a rate of 1000 students per year, which is the highest growth rate in the state. Money magazine has rated Shelby County in its “Top 100 School Systems in the United States.”

For those looking to further their education, Memphis offers a number of opportunities to do just that. The University of Tennessee has it’s College of Medicine in Memphis, the University of Mississippi, Desoto Center, Crichton College and the University of Memphis, as well as several junior colleges provide a number of options to choose from as well. The area’s colleges and universities educate thousands of residents annually.
