Because of its central location in the eastern half of the United States, Knoxville is home to many warehousing and distribution companies. The University of Tennessee, National Transportation Research Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Tennessee Valley Authority all play a large part in the economical growth in Knoxville.

Other industries in Knoxville include meatpacking, clothing and textiles, electronics, tobacco marketing, metal products, marble, wood, chemicals, zinc, and the manufacturing of seat belts. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other attractions contribute to tourism being another large influence on the economy of Knoxville.

Knoxville is home to cable televisions HGTV, one of the fastest growing networks in cable history. In less than nine years HGTV has developed a following of nearly 84 million households.

Statistics show the cost of living in Knoxville to be 12 percent below the national average.
