The bluffs on the rambling Mississippi river where Memphis is located have been inhabited for thousands of years, first by the mighty mound builders of the Mississippian culture, then by the Spanish, French and finally Americans. Memphis is a city filled with tremendous history and controversy all woven in a rich tapestry that has become a diverse and culturally broad city for those who call it home. There are actually many “mini-histories” that could be written about Memphis and all of the many cultures who have made it what it has become today. After being founded in the early 1800’s by Andrew Jackson, it later became the home of the blues in the twentieth century and later rock and roll when Elvis Presley took it as his home. Memphis today is a thriving city of one million inhabitants, rich with history and full of a multitude of opportunities for adventures at every turn.

The first to live along the Mississippi where Memphis now sits were the Chickasaw Indians. They were the “mound builders” who built what are the mounds that line the Mississippi river in the area. The first European to explore the area was the Spaniard Hernando Desoto in 1541. Desoto was followed by the French explorers Marquette and Joliet who sailed down the river through Memphis a hundred years later. LaSalle followed them in 1682 and then the French built Fort Assumption in 1739. After the French and Indian war in 1763, England gained control of the bluffs although the area was Chickasaw by treaty. The Indians, French, English, Spanish and new “Americans” coexisted along the river until Tennessee became a U.S. territory in 1790. In 1796, Tennessee became a state and although this land belonged to the Chickasaw Indians, the new settlers eventually took over. In 1818 the Chickasaw relinquished their northern territory, including their land that would eventually become the City of Memphis. It was actually the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, along with General Winchester and Judge Overton that were the “founders” of Memphis in 1819.

Memphis has always been a center for exchange and distribution, and its rich delta soil made it a huge economic base. It was “King Cotton” to those to those who partnered with it. Unfortunately, slavery played a key role in this commerce and agri-business. Many, if not a majority of those who labored on these farms were West Africans who had been bought in the slave trade. This reality made Memphis a key pawn in the Civil War. The Union and the Confederate forces both valued and fought fiercely for Memphis and its surrounding areas. After the Union took control of Memphis, it became a home for many former slaves. During post-war reconstruction Black Memphians made strides in social, political and economic activities.

Following the war, a yellow fever epidemic nearly destroyed Memphis. The city lost its charter in 1879. The city was saved by a new sewer system, the first of its kind and a new supply of artesian water and it remains known to this day for its pure water.

The city would be plagued nonetheless by the deeply rooted divides over race and poverty. There would be many who would emerge as heroes and villains throughout the next century in Memphis history. The early history of Memphis truly reads like a great southern novel. But in the later half of the twentieth century, Memphis’ history would be shaped by an event that would also shape our nation. In 1968, the civil rights struggle was at its height and Dr. Martin Luther King, Nobel Peace Prize winner, was at the center of the debate. He had come to Memphis to speak on behalf of the Memphis Sanitation Workers and their dignity and economic equity. He was there to address the realities of the working poor and draw the attention of America to their struggles. Although his commitment had always been to non-violent change, his life was violently taken on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968. Many of these contributions to the ceaseless struggles of bettering human relations are commemorated in the National Civil Rights Museum which was built at the Lorraine Motel where King was assassinated. It stands as a shrine to the human spirit, to justice, sacrifice, courage and peace. Memphis has always and will continue to be a beacon of hope for those longing to see the dreams of Dr. King come to fruition both in the country and around the world. Its history is both marred with pain and painted with hope of how this struggle is not only a worthy one, but one in which Memphians place their belief.

Memphis has a mid-latitude, moist continental climate. This basically means it has four “real” seasons with cold winters and hot, hot summers! Spring and autumn can be as varied and unpredictable as one can imagine with severe weather like thunderstorms and strong winds, or breezy beautiful days filled with nothing but sunshine. Summers are very humid thanks to moisture encroaching from the Gulf of Mexico, even though the temperature rarely reaches great heights. This humidity, however, makes it feel far hotter than that thermometer reads! Winters, by contrast, can be very cold with temps falling below freezing fairly often. Memphis can average around 6 inches of snow each year. There is also plenty of rain to keep the area green, most of it falling in thunderstorms, but this doesn’t mean there are not plenty of pretty sunny days! Memphis has sun for around 64% of its days, which actually adds up to more than Miami can boast!

It has a great “city-life” with all of the culture that one could want from a big city and yet it offers the beauty and bounty of the suburbs as well. It is a city full of people who are diverse and free to be who they are and yet committed to help their neighbor. It has the beauty and kindness of the South and yet the progressiveness of the larger cities on the East and West coasts. Memphis is a city that is rich with history, and full of exciting places to explore and visit. If you are a family raising kids, or a single person looking to build your career, Memphis covers the spectrum and can do it all well. It is a city that has grown-up through struggle and is continuing to grow and develop both economically and socially and culturally.

It is the birthplace of the blues on Beale Street, the home of some of the world’s best barbeque and the central location for some of the world’s most renowned businesses. FedEx was born in Memphis and Fred Smith, its founder, made Memphis its primary hub. Due to its location, Memphis is central to many other major metro areas around the country and thus it has become a major distribution center for major companies. It is the home to a growing number of nationally and internationally known corporations, including approximately 150 businesses from 22 countries. Two of these companies are Fortune 500 companies, FedEx and AutoZone Incorporated. Memphis has been the city that many have associated with their favorite films, whether it was Great Balls of Fire!, Cast Away, The Firm, Hustle & Flow or Walk the Line. All in all, Memphis is many things to many people, but to those who know it best, it is a great place to live!

In the last two decades, Downtown has been transformed from a virtual ghost town into a virtual hotspot for those seeking a thriving urban lifestyle. The main residential factor in this equation has been Harbor Town, the result of visionary developers who wanted to make the edge of the Mississippi home to families, singles and empty nesters alike. There are a variety of price ranges and housing options in the Downtown area as well as all of the amenities needed for a convenient lifestyle.

The Uptown edge of the downtown area provides smaller housing options right in the middle of the action. With sports, the arts, dining and shopping, there is rarely a dull moment in this area of the city. There are lofts, warehouse-style opportunities as well as smaller homes to widen the array of choices in this “real city” neighborhood.

Midtown is a fantastic and exciting place to live in Memphis. Just east of Downtown and West of the ‘burbs', it is the home of eclectic architecture and historic districts. There are also new home options in this area as well. Midtown is home to two of the best entertainment districts in Memphis, Cooper-Young and Overton Square, the Memphis Zoo, tons of specialty shops and eateries as well as the Brooks Museum. It is a “hoppin’” place to live in the big “M-town.”

East Memphis flows right into the multitude of suburbs that are the bulk of the residential areas of Memphis. Modern housing and nationally known retailers are scattered throughout suburbs. There are a plethora of options from Germantown, which used to be a bedroom community known for its horse shows, but is now one of the most sought after areas in Memphis, to Collierville which skirts the Eastern most part of the city with its rolling hills and farms.

The options are enormous in Memphis, but it is hard to go wrong with such an excellent city full of such well-developed neighborhoods.

The Metro-Memphis area is comprised of five (5) counties: Shelby, Fayette, Tipton (Tennessee), Crittenden County (Arkansas), and Desoto County (Mississippi). This is a tremendous area and thus there are many different school systems contained within this area. These educational opportunities in the Memphis area make finding the right school as easy as ever! The number of public, private, parochial, and optional schools that are available give your family plenty of options from which to choose. The public school system in Shelby County is broken down into two distinct boards of education. The Memphis City School system, which is the 18th largest school system in the country with 191 schools in grades K-12 and the Shelby County School system which has more than 45,000 students and is the 4th largest district in the state of Tennessee. The Memphis City School system has 31 optional schools available within the system which offer students choices in program such as health sciences, international studies and college prep classes, as well as advanced placement classes for college credit. In 2004, the senior class was awarded close to $65 million in scholarships to different universities and colleges around the country. The Shelby County School system includes all of the public schools in the county outside the corporate limits of the city of Memphis, including incorporated towns of Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington. Enrollment has grown at a rate of 1000 students per year, which is the highest growth rate in the state. Money magazine has rated Shelby County in its “Top 100 School Systems in the United States.”

For those looking to further their education, Memphis offers a number of opportunities to do just that. The University of Tennessee has it’s College of Medicine in Memphis, the University of Mississippi, Desoto Center, Crichton College and the University of Memphis, as well as several junior colleges provide a number of options to choose from as well. The area’s colleges and universities educate thousands of residents annually.
