A table runner is a wide piece of fabric, backed with another piece of fabric, pointed on both ends, and sometimes adorned with a tassel on each point. Table runners are placed in the center of the table, lengthwise, and hang off each end to add a decorative touch.
Table runners can be the only linen on the table, or can be combined with a table cloth, place mats, and/or napkins. Table runners are most often cloth, but can also be made of lengths of ribbon festooned down the center, or branches of pine boughs placed in lengths down the middle. Table runners can be the only adornment on the table, or can be topped with a floral arrangement or other centerpiece.
Table runners come in many different fabrics for every day use as well as in finer fabrics such as linen, silk, lace and velvet for special occasions. Everyday fabrics are designed for regular cleaning and ease of use while special event and seasonal table runners are often made of fabrics which must be dry cleaned or hand washed.
Table runners are easy to make and easy to care for. The average cost of a table runner is from $10 to $30 each, but for all the elegance they add, these prices are very reasonable.
Table runners serve a practical purpose as well as a decorative function. When a centerpiece is always on the table, they protect the finish of the table from friction and scratches.
