Everyday table runners are usually made from cotton, polyester, or cotton/polyester blend fabrics. Because these fabrics are easy to care for, they are a perfect fit for table linens of all kinds. Table runners remain on the table during meals and are always subject to spills and messes. Cotton/polyester blend fabrics are perfect for this chore since they can usually be thrown in the washing machine, then the dryer and placed directly back on the table without the need of pressing them.
If your table runner was purchased in a store, it will have a Use and Care label on the underside of the runner. Follow the directions for cleaning and pressing (if necessary) on this label for best results. When washing the table runner, be sure to place it in the load of laundry that is most like it in color and fabric.
If the table runner has been stained or heavily soiled, use of a safe pre-wash product is recommended. Pre-treating stains and heavily soiled spots keeps them from setting before the runner can be laundered. It’s very important to leave extra space for laundered items to move around in the washing machine when they are heavily soiled. The extra space allows items to move freely in the machine and assists with better cleaning.
If the table runner is cotton or another fabric whose colors bleed easily, you may want to wash it alone in the delicate care cycle or with colors that are very similar to the colors in the runner. Using cold water for all bright colors is advised.
When drying the table runner, only dry it long enough to remove the wrinkles. Drying it completely may cause it to fade and set in wrinkles created during the drying process. The dryer should not be too full, just as the washing machine should not be overloaded. Remove dry items from the dryer immediately and place the table runner directly on the table to avoid creases from being folded.
