Sofa tables are the tables used to fill space and decorate the back of the sofa when the sofa is positioned away from the wall. Its function will vary according to the décor of the room, but its position is almost always behind the sofa. Sofa tables are almost always centered directly behind the sofa. However, if a sofa table is placed in another location in the room, it is no longer a sofa table, but an occasional table, but true occasional tables are usually larger than the average sofa table.

Sofa tables are defined not just by their position behind the sofa, but also by their height. Cocktail tables are usually about 16” to 18” tall. End tables can be from 20” to 28” tall, but sofa tables dwarf the others with an average height of 30” to 45” tall, depending on the style and the height of the sofa it will compliment.

Sofa tables are traditionally designed in a manner that allows the color and pattern of the sofa upholstery to show around and under the top of the table. The legs of sofa tables are usually thin and often curved to follow the lines of the sofa. Working together, the sofa table and sofa create a tapestry frame which highlights the architectural aspects of the table.

Because of their height, sofa tables often have an extra support just a few inches from the floor. Not only does this add stability to the overall design, but it also helps maintain a more even balance for the tall, narrow tables.
