Sofa tables are designed to compliment the sofa and the space directly behind the sofa. To do that, most sofa tables are not heavy or sturdy, but rather, are light and open. Because of the styles of the tables, the items placed on top of the sofa must be lightweight.
Vases, flower arrangements, lamps, framed photos of family members, and even a small stack of books are great toppers for sofa tables, but heavy pottery or other items, or large displays that are not stable could cause the table to be top heavy, and therefore unsafe. So it is essential that the items on top of the sofa table be considered as carefully as the design of the table itself.
Most designers consider what will be on display as important as the table, and therefore, the width and height of the table should be taken into consideration when display items are chosen. A small bowl for keys and pocket change or a basket for the television remote or your cell phone would be a good choice. Even though a large aquarium, filled with beautiful, rare fish would create a lovely view, it might be too heavy for the standard sofa table.
Sofa tables can also be used as the central telephone center. Having the telephone in a central location makes it easy to answer any calls that come in. Another use for a sofa table is for serving small snacks and appetizers buffet style while you and your family are watching the weekend game or during an informal get together with clients.
