Choosing a Sofa Table

When choosing a sofa table to compliment your sofa, you need to consider the length and height of the sofa before venturing out to the store. These measurements will help narrow the search.

Another aspect to consider is how close to the top of the sofa you would like to the table top to be. If you plan to use the sofa table for the telephone, the table top needs to be close enough to the top of the sofa to make reaching over it easy without being so tall that the sofa is dwarfed by the table.

When deciding on what width you would like the sofa table to be, consider how much walk space you will lose by placing a table behind the sofa and whether or not the remaining walk space is sufficient for the traffic of the room. If you are thinking of a table that will only leave you 24” to 30” of walk space, you have two options. The first is to consider moving the sofa forward to create more space behind the sofa. The second option is to consider a more narrow table.

If space isn’t an issue, but creating a secondary work space in the living area is a need, then perhaps a small desk would make a good sofa table for your family.

No matter which table you choose, make sure you speak to the sales associate about refunds and exchanges so that you can return the table if you decide it isn’t right for the room or your needs once it is in place. Furniture purchases should be made slowly and with great care since families usually only make major furniture purchases every 10 to 15 years. Make sure the sofa table you purchase is one that will serve your needs for years to come.
