Not all pedestals look like an ancient Greek column, although that is the most popular style. The classic Greek column has clean lines and only a small amount of ornamentation. Their simple lines and unadorned style lend themselves to many decorating styles.
Cathedral style pedestals, are similar but are much more adorned than the simple Greek columns. They are typically more richly carved and often include leaves, floral elements, and vines as part of the design. Because of their ornate design, cathedral style columns make wonderful additions to gardens and patios.
Table top pedestals come in shorter heights, but can still contain any design style that you wish. They can be square, round, oval or free form in shape so that it adds height and draws attention to the items placed upon it.
Antebellum pedestals are not as well known as Greek columns, but have a beauty all their own with their center spindles and delicate lines. Most antebellum pedestals are made of wood with different finishes, and almost all are delicate and slender, rather than large and imposing like Greek columns can be.
Statues and Sculptures can also be used as pedestals. When they are shaped to include supports for holding a smooth surface on top, they make excellent pedestals and supports for almost any object.
