No matter what you store in or on your end tables, beware of placing so many items on top that you block conversation to other parts of the room. This may also happen if the plant you place there grows too large. Choosing dwarf varieties of plants for end tables may be the best choice unless sofa seclusion is your decorating goal.

If using the end tables for guests or your own evening entertainment, it would also be wise to leave enough space on the tabletop for your own coffee mug or glass. Cluttered tables tend to make a room feel disorganized, not restful, so keep tabletop items to a minimum. Let the table itself be a statement if it can, but if your end tables are traditional and your room is modern, painting or covering them may offer a solution to your drab table dilemma.

If your table top has a few display items such as candles or photos, varying the size and height of the items will add interest without adding to that cluttered feeling.

But most importantly, keep the decorative items, plants, and photos in the same theme as the room itself. Continuing the theme you’ve established with the furniture will make the room feel polished and complete.
