Round, oval or ottoman coffee tables would avoid the potential danger for these loved ones that sharp edges might present. Also if the area where you will be placing your coffee table is a high traffic area, you may want to also consider staying away from those options with sharp edges.

Another issue to consider is that of ease of cleaning. Some people prefer a mobile coffee table for easy vacuuming underneath. Many coffee tables come with wheels, especially the ottoman styles and many of the modern styles.
