· The Gateway Arch
The Arch is obviously the most famous sight to see in St. Louis. Visitors can travel to the top of the Arch for a breath-taking view of St. Louis and the Mississippi River. Below the Arch is a museum that chronicles the westward expansion and the story of settlers making that difficult journey. You can also watch a fantastic IMAX film on Lewis and Clark and their explorations that offers both a history lesson and a look into their exciting adventures.
· The St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team
In spring and summer, there is always time to check out a Cardinals baseball game. There is nothing like a Cardinals game that “speaks” St. Louis to a visitor.
· Forest Park
Although St. Louis boasts of 104 other city parks, Forest Park is queen of them all, with an extensive network of trails, a golf course, tennis courts, and much more. For $15 an hour, your family can tour the park’s lakes and canals in a rowboat or paddleboat. Don’t miss the opportunity to row your passengers perilously close to one of the Grand Basin’s eight majestic fountains! Within its 1,293 acres, Forest Park also incorporates a number of St. Louis’ other premier attractions, including the Art Museum, Zoo and Science Center—here comes the best part—all of which are free.
· The Zoo
A trip to the St. Louis Zoo is like circumnavigating the globe in a single day, without the jetlag. The hippos will delight you with their graceful underwater acrobatics. The bears, reptiles and big cats will thrill you, with the sheer power they display as they go about their daily lives. And the incredible variety of the animals found at this zoo will dazzle you, and remind you of how amazing our world truly is. No wonder Zagat Survey's U.S. Family Travel Guide named it America’s #1 zoo! Don’t miss two of the newest exhibits: the Penguin and Puffin Coast (“the ‘coolest’ place in St. Louis,” at 40-50 year-round), and the Fragile Forest (the new outdoor home of the zoo’s orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees).
· The Art Museum
The Art Museum might not be as ‘wild’ as the Zoo, but it still takes its visitors on quite a cultural adventure.
· The ScienceCenter
750-plus hands-on exhibits make this renowned science center fun for both children and adults. Don’t miss the Energizer® Machine, a new exhibition in which various mechanisms speed colored balls along a 1,500 foot, crazily looping track. There is also an IMAX theater that will have a new show in 2006.
· The MissouriBotanical Garden
Your family will see plant life in a whole new light, as you experience the rain forest firsthand in the Climatron® conservatory, and wander through authentic English, French and Japanese gardens.
· The Muny
The Muny is one of the largest outdoor theaters in the country and boasts some of the best productions as well. Each summer week is filled with a different production. A summer visit to St. Louis could include a warm summer night’s visit to the Muny to take in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” or “Annie” or any number of shows. There is even a section of “free seating!”
