Perhaps the most recognizable feature about St. Louis is the breathtaking St. Louis Arch. The Arch was completed in 1965 but the first concepts of it were conceived nearly 15 years earlier. It stands 587 feet tall which is 282 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. In 1935 The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial was named as a National Memorial. It was to commemorate President Jefferson’s vision of western expansion and the Dred Scott slavery trials. The Jefferson Memorial is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and spans 91 acres that include the Old Courthouse and Cathedral, the Museum of Western Expansion, as well as the St. Louis Gateway Arch.
