In 1904 it was declared that there were no longer unexplored parts of the United States. At this time a World’s Fair was planned and St. Louis was honored in hosting it for the city’s role in the westward expansion after the purchase of the Louisiana Territory. The fair was held in Forrest Park and commanded over 20 million visitors. Over a span of 7 months over 43 countries set up exhibits at the fair. The World’s Fair is where foods such as the ice cream cone and iced tea first made their public appearances. It was also the place where the legendary song Meet me in St. Louis by Scott Joplin was debuted. Forrest Park is still one of St. Louis’s most visited attractions.
Along with the World’s Fair St. Louis was also home to the 1904 Olympic Games that were held on the grounds of Forrest Park and the Washington University campus.
In 1908 St. Louis held the first hot air balloon race. Twenty years later in 1927 Charles Lindbergh flew the first successful flight non-stop over the Atlantic ocean from New York to Paris. Lindbergh made this trip in a plane he named The Spirit of St. Louis. The city is home to Boeing’s military manufacturing plant.
