The civil war was a very dividing time for Americans and the city of St. Louis was no exception. The Dred Scott slavery trials that started the Civil War were held in St. Louis at the Old Courthouse. The trials went all the way to the Supreme Court which in turn handed down the decision to deny slaves citizenship and rights. This verdict sparked the beginning of the Civil War. Missouri was the only state north of the Mason-Dixon Line to join the union. The state of Missouri saw more battles than any other state during the Civil War other than Tennessee and Virginia.
