The Name: South Carolina was named for King Charles I. The word “Carolinius” is Latin for Charles. In 1629 King Charles gave the area which is now Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to his attorney general, Sir Robert Heath. The area was called “Carolana.” However, Heath did not make much effort to develop the area. In 1649 King Charles I was beheaded, but by 1660 his son, Charles II, was restored to the throne. Charles II renamed Carolana “Carolina” and gave the land mass to eight of his most favored supporters who were called Lords Proprietors. Six years later the Lords Proprietors sent colonists to settle a territory at Port Royal. The colonists settled along the Ashley River and called their town Albemarle Point after one of the Proprietors. Later, however, the Proprietors changed its named to Charles Town to honor the king. So, South Carolina was named for King Charles I and Charleston, for King Charles II.
