The homes and gardens in Charleston are basically living museums. Several of these places are kind enough to offer themselves to the public and are definitely worth visiting.

·        Calhoun Mansion: A 24,000 square-foot mansion built by wealthy banker George Walton Williams after the Civil War that showcases a beautifully and elaborately decorated interior.
·        Charleston Tea Plantation: This is America’s only tea plantation and is available during limited times for touring.
·        Cypress Gardens: These beautiful gardens and old rice plantation can be explored by either a flat-bottom river boat tour or a walking tour.
·        Drayton Hall: This plantation is the only one located on the Ashley River that survived the Civil War. The colonial architecture, gardens and marsh are some of the area’s most beautiful.
·        Magnolia Plantation and Gardens: This is America’s oldest continually-planted garden and has been owned by the same family since 1676.
·        Middleton Place: This plantation offers a reenactment of plantation life and the America’s oldest landscaped gardens.
