When you are thinking about buying a helmet to ride your snowmobile, you just don’t go into the store, pick up one that is in your favorite color, go to the check out and buy it. There are many things to consider first. Here are certain things you need to look at first:

·        Head Measurement: Before you buy any helmet you have to make sure it fits properly. So you have to measure the circumference of your head to get the right size. You can do this by wrapping a flexible tape measure around the widest part of your head. In most cases, the area about an inch above your eyes and ears is the correct location. But take a few measures above and below to be sure.
·        Put Helmet On: After taking your measurements, take a helmet and try it on. Always remember that a helmet absolutely must fit snuggly or else you will be too uncomfortable and won’t have the proper protection. As you put the helmet on your head, hold the chinstraps and pull down to make sure it goes over your head nicely. If the helmet fits correctly, it will feel snug without restricting blood flow to the brain. Don’t be alarmed if the helmet fits to snug at first. That’s because the liner has to get adjusted to the contours of your head. After a few hours of use, the liner will adjust itself. Don’t forget to fasten the chinstrap so it secures the helmet. After you fasten the chinstrap, try to lift and move the helmet. It shouldn’t budge.
·        Try It Out: When you put the helmet on your head and fasten it down, try it out by wearing it for a short time while shopping for other supplies. This way you will know whether or not the helmet is for you. The time when you get in your snowmobile will be too late to test it.
·        Remember Safety: A reminder is in order here: no matter what helmet you decide to buy, it cannot protect you from all kinds of impacts. The helmet will only protect the part of the head it covers. To provide the best protection possible, always fasten the chinstrap. Otherwise, you run the risk of serious injury in case of an accident, when the helmet flies off the head.
