Should I use Outsourcing in my business?

The answer to that question rests largely on your personal preferences and the needs of your business. You should begin, of course, by asking yourself whether your business could benefit from a service provider. Are there certain processes or functions within your business that you believe could be handled with less cost and greater efficiency by a service provider? Alternatively, are you convinced that the growth of your business demands a new function, such as telemarketing, but you believe that the addition of an in-house telemarketing staff would prove too costly? In either of those cases you should at least explore the possibility of outsourcing. In addition to those principal concerns, consider the following questions:

Am I comfortable with a partial loss of control? Regardless of the specificity of your service provider guidelines, you will lose some control over the day-to-day operations of the function or process you choose to outsource. If the increase in time for core-competency issues isn’t worth that loss of control, outsourcing probably isn’t for you.

Will outsourcing this particular function weaken my connection with my customer base? This is particularly important for small businesses whose stability is maintained through frequent communication with their customers. The outsourcing of certain business functions may lessen the frequency or quality of that contact, so if you greatly fear that prospect you may wish to keep the function/process in-house.

How will my employees react to outsourcing? This is less of a concern if you’ll be engaging in greenfield outsourcing, but in traditional outsourcing the potential turmoil caused by outsourcing may lessen the quality of work you receive from your employees. If it appears that outsourcing might significantly, negatively affect the workplace moods of your employees, you’ll want to weigh whether outsourcing is really necessary for your business before you make that decision.
