As you’ve probably gathered by now, outsourcing can potentially ease your workload and lower your costs, but it’s not without certain risks. Consequently, if you decide to outsource, you’ll want to ensure that you choose the best possible service provider for the specific needs of your business. Consider the factors below as you make your decision:

Reputation: The service provider industry has grown rapidly over the last decade, so there are many service providers in almost every function/process area you can imagine. The high volume of service providers guarantees competitive pricing, but it also means some providers are much better than others. The service provider will represent your business, so make sure you’re comfortable with your reputation in their hands. Ask other companies about the reliability, expertise and history of the service provider.

Expertise: Whether you’re outsourcing traditionally, or instead hiring a service provider for the purposes of handling a new process within your company, you’re doing so, at least in part, because of the service provider’s expertise in that area. It only makes sense, then, to investigate the actual competence possessed by the service provider. You’ll establish guidelines within the relationship, but they’ll do the work, so find a provider whose expertise in the outsourced function will give you a competitive edge.

Compatibility: Your business will work closely and frequently with the service provider, so it’s very important that the personalities on both sides lend themselves to a sustained relationship. Additionally, if the outsourced function is one which will bring the service provider in close contact with your customers, make certain that the service provider’s methods of operation are compatible with the needs and desires of your clients.
