What are Business Plans?

When confronted with the prospect of a long road trip to a new destination, do you commonly hop in your car, point it in the general direction of the city in question and hope that you’ll eventually arrive? Of course not, for you know that it’s highly unlikely that you’ll ever reach your destination. Instead, you’ll consult a map and create a plan that allows you to travel as quickly and painlessly as possible. In the life of a business, business plans serve much the same purpose. Properly crafted business plans identify the goals of a business and provide owners and employees with clearly marked roads to those goals.

Although most business plans identify goals and methods for the realization of those goals, the plans vary significantly in structure and content based upon the needs of the business. A small business owner, for example, might simply type out a short plan for his own use, while a large corporation might retain a business planning company in order to create an ornate, multi-layered presentation for the benefit of employees and potential investors. If you are considering the creation of a business plan for your own business, it’s important to create that plan as needs dictate and as your resources allow, rather than clinging to a particular definition.
