History of Teapots

Teapots are an age old device. They date back many years and were invented, solely because of their need. Tea had been developed and become extremely popular. It was regularly consumed and it required an efficient brewing device and a drinking mechanism, thus the teapot was introduced.   Teapots were used to brew the tea and they were used as the drinking vessel as well.  It is amazing that something that seems so simple is still very important to people today. Although they have changed a bit, the purpose of a teapot is still the same, to brew tea. Through the years teapots have not only become a great way to brew tea, but a conversation piece, a decoration, or maybe even a collection.

 

Some historians believe the design for teapots may have derived from one of two inspirations. The idea may have been inspired from the Islamic coffee pots or from Chinese wine vessels. Whichever case, teapots have become a significant piece that are still enjoyed today. 

 

Teapots have moved through many different design phases from century to century. The twentieth century brought back a simpler style of teapot. By this time teapots were beginning to transition to a more functional tool. The 1930’s brought about an art deco movement while the1960’s introduced a more functional design and had moved into the “modernism” phase. During the 1980’s many of the older, more classic designs were brought back and the teapots had a since of elegance about them.
