Purchasing Tips for Mixers

Both hand mixers and stand mixers are distinguished by their wattage and the number of speeds they offer, but in reality, these distinctions are not as important as they might seem. A mixer’s wattage indicates the power of its motor, but it does not give any indication of how well the mixer mixes ingredients. In addition, a mixer may boast a great number of different speeds (up to nine in a hand mixer and sixteen in a stand), but most users rarely need more than a few different speeds.

When shopping for a hand mixer, look for a simple, inexpensive, and reliable model. Some models come with wire beaters that are easier to clean because they do not have the traditional thick center post. Other models offer a wire whisk or a dough hook for special projects or a “slow start” feature that helps prevent liquid ingredients from splashing. These features are nice, but unnecessary; simply look for a mixer that is easy to hold and powerful enough to mix your ingredients. Consumer Reports recommended five models in particular—three KitchenAid mixers, one Cuisinart, and a Braun.

If you want a stand mixer, consider your cooking preferences. If you regularly double recipes or cook for large crowds, purchase a stand mixer with a large bowl (bowls differ based on the number of cups of flour they can handle). If appearance matters to you, you can choose from a wide variety of colors. You should look for a mixer that is convenient to use (i.e. can you tilt the head of the stand mixer up to allow you easy access to the bowl?) You may also want to consider the weight of particular stand mixers since you might frequently lift and move them. Finally, there is a wider variety among the costs of stand mixers than there is among hand mixers, so price can be an important distinguishing factor. Consumer Reports named as its Quick Picks a $180 KitchenAid model and a $150 Hamilton Beach model. .
