» Frequently Asked Questions about Mixers
When should I use a blender instead of a mixer?
For the most part,
blenders leave you with a liquid product while mixers produce a solid product. There are exceptions, of course; a mixer can make drinks, but unless, the drinks have a significant amount of body, you are better off using a blender. One other note: you may come across handheld mixers or wand-style
blenders, but these are the same appliance. Both names refer to a tool with limited power that allows you to reach into containers or mix ingredients with only a single wand.
What should I do if my mixer stops working?
As a first step, turn off your mixer, and clean it and the beaters carefully. Second, try reducing the amount of batter in the mixing bowl or adding some liquid (if the recipe allows for it). Of course, some items are simply too thick to mix using a mixer, so you may need to finish mixing by hand.
On the other hand, you may have a more serious problem. Determine if your motor is still running, as that may help you diagnose the problem. If the motor is not running, determine if the mixer is under warranty coverage and contact the manufacturer.
Are there any dangers to using a mixer?
Beware of the mixer-propelled chocolate chip or walnut that shoots out of the mixing bowl. All kidding aside, mixers are safe appliances. You may bruise a finger if you put it into the path of a beater, but you’re not in serious bodily harm. You should, however, keep an eye on the mixer’s electrical cord, as it is regularly near sinks, spills, or other sources of water.
