What are the advantages of using an ice cream machine rather than buying store-bought ice cream?
An ice cream machine gives you complete control over exactly what you are eating. You will know every ingredient that goes into your ice cream, so if you don’t want one, simply cut it out of the recipe. Therefore, it is easy to make homemade ice cream healthier than mass-produced store-bought ice cream. In addition, you get exactly the amount of ice cream you want, so you never over-eat, unless you plan on it beforehand.
Because you get exactly the amount of ice cream you want, you can also afford to be risky. Perhaps you’ve always wondered what rainbow sherbet ice cream tastes like but never wanted to spend the money to find out. With an ice cream machine, you can make just a little rainbow sherbet and see what you think. Ice cream machines are especially good with fruits as well, because you use fresh fruit, rather than the fruit (or fruit flavoring) that was added in at the plant.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, ice cream machines are fun. Children and adults will enjoy the process (and the result) of making homemade ice cream. Perhaps you’ll even agree with the masses that swear homemade ice cream tastes better than anything bought at the store.
Why isn’t my ice cream hard?
Homemade ice cream is generally softer than store-bought ice cream, but if yours is particularly and perpetually soft, the problem may be your freezer bowl, which might not have been completely frozen when you made the ice cream. Pour the ice cream mixture back into a refrigerated bowl and refreeze the freezer bowl before trying again. It takes several hours for the freezer bowl to completely freeze, so you will have to wait a day to re-make your ice cream, but hopefully, refreezing will solve the problem. If it doesn’t, check your owner’s manual for model-specific tips and/or call the manufacturer.
What kind of ingredients can I add to my ice cream?
The sky is the limit! Try chocolate chips, pecans, walnuts, peanuts, raisins, strawberries, cinnamon, and more. If you are concerned with the healthiness of your ice cream, try using sweetener rather than sugar, and use skim milk and light cream as your dairy base. Experiment with different combinations and see what you like. If you are using hard ingredients and you want to add them in during the churning process, chop them up to a size no bigger than a chocolate chip; otherwise, you’re free to try whatever you want.
